For over 90 years the Beutler name has been synonymous with great, professional rodeo livestock, colorful shows and prompt productions. Throughout the building years of professional rodeo, the Beutler family has produced some of the largest, most popular rodeos across the United States.
With a small start in the 1930’s, when the sons of John Beutler decided that they would become rodeo stock contractors, has developed into a rodeo company that is now five generations strong.
Elra, Jake, and Lynn Beutler began this long, successful journey in September 1929, when they trailed ten horses to the Custer County Fair Rodeo in Clinton, Oklahoma, and decided that this would be their life’s endeavor.
From those meager beginnings developed a reputation for tough stock, timely run shows, and a professionalism that was unmatched in this emerging sport. The Beutlers were also instrumental in introducing celebrities, such as television actors, movie stars, singers and other well-known performers into their productions.
By the 1950’s, with their merger with the renowned rodeo producer, Verne Elliott, the Beutler Brothers became the largest stock contractors in the country. Over this time, the Beutler’s produced many prominent rodeos such as Cheyenne Frontier Days, Snake River Stampede in Nampa, ID, Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo in Colorado Springs, CO, New Mexico State Fair Rodeo in Albuquerque, National Western Stock Show and Rodeo in Denver, CO, and the Oklahoma State Fair Rodeo in Oklahoma City.
Much of the rough stock that the Beutler’s produced were just as famous as the owners. The Beutler Brothers purchased a palomino gelding named Descent that went on to claim the “Bucking Horse of the Year” award a record six times.
The rodeo family was also very instrumental in helping to form the first National Finals Rodeo held in Dallas, Texas, in 1959. The well-known rodeo announcer Pete Logan once said, “It would be entirely fitting to recognize Lynn Beutler as the ‘Father of the National Finals Rodeo’”.
After over 40 years in the rodeo business, Lynn and Jake sold the Beutler Brothers Rodeo Company in 1967.
Beutler and Son Rodeo Company would continue in operation as one of the premier stock contracting companies in the United States. In 1989, Bennie joined forces with E.K. Gaylord, II, one of the principle owners of the Oklahoma Publishing Co. and the Lazy E Arena near Guthrie. The livestock company was renamed the Beutler-Gaylord Rodeo Company for the next twelve years. In 2001, Ed Gaylord left the rodeo business and Bennie’s son, Rhett, became a partner in the company with the name reverting to Beutler & Son Rodeo Company.
Beutler & Son Rodeo Company have had and continue to have award-winning livestock that are widely sought after by cowboys, rodeo committees and their fans. They consistently provide several head of livestock each year to the National Finals Rodeo.
